Literacy in Mozambique
THE PROBLEM
Mozambique remains one of the poorest, most underdeveloped countries in the world. Sky-high unemployment rates and deteriorated families set the backdrop for Mozambique’s children.
Economic dependence on South Africa, severe drought, and a prolonged civil war have slowed Mozambique’s development.
With current political stability, economic growth and an abundance of natural resources, many doors are opening for work. Sadly, the lack of education perpetuates a void of educated workers and prevents locals from equitably benefiting from foreign investment.
Currently only 1% of girls go on to college, 70% of women in Mozambique are illiterate, and 66% of primary school students graduate without proper reading, writing, and math skills.
CouldYou?’s literacy initiative is working towards an equitable, low-cost, and transformational solution.
Literacy in Mozambique
THE SOLUTION
CouldYou? is committed to:
⇒ Transforming the current education system in Mozambique to dismantle the chains of extreme poverty.
⇒ Providing low-cost teacher training to help teachers identify illiterate students and get them literate in 5 months.
⇒ Partnering with the Ministry of Education, to continue to build on the positive results in youth literacy rates.
62% of the population of Mozambique is between the ages of 5 and 25. Over the next 10 years, our literacy program could impact 16.7 million school-aged children.

PARTNERSHIP:
OURSTORIES
Mr Rabbit and the Well
In partnership with OurStories, CouldYou? created an initiative to produce and distribute series of children’s books native to Mozambique, sharing one story from each province. This will allow the next generation to learn and grow with books that reflect and celebrate their culture.
Mr. Rabbit and the Well (Nwa Mpfundla Ni Shilhowo), was created by literacy specialist April Nickell and designer Eric Emch, and translated by Mozambican educator Manuel Jeque Francisco. This unique book is culturally relevant, mirroring the local values in Mozambique and instilling cultural pride and ownership.
Since its publication, 3,500 books have been distributed to students and parents who have read the book. It’s endorsed by Former Mozambican President Chissano; who called it “an important contribution towards building a world of peace and harmony, founded in a better understanding among different people.”
