Yagazie Foundation successfully hosted the Menstrual Hygiene program for girls from Kosec School based in Isolo, Lagos at Consulate General of Brazil in Lagos Nigeria yesterday, 26th Day of February 2022.

The Consulate General of the Brazilian Consulate in Lagos, Amb. Francisco Luz, and his beloved wife H. E. Panizzi Luz, Head of Culture & Education, and other Dignitaries from the Brazilian Consulate graced the health-based program for the benefit of the students and guests.

The representative of UNICEF Nigeria sent his greetings to the children and the entire team of the Yagazie Foundation for a job well done during his presentation.

Pharm Adaeze Onuoha, the Director of Yagazie Foundation and the moderator during the event started with an opening prayer. The Consulate General opened the event with a prayer and warm introductory speech and  officiallly opened the event. During his speech, he asked the girls, entire Yagazie Foundation team, and volunteers to always stay focused and cultivate the habit of reading which would enhance their knowledge because it is something that can never be taken away from them. His wife advised the girls to always stay healthy by keeping their environment safe from infection and bacteria.

The UNICEF officer,  Mr. Job Ominyi did an overview of menstrual hygiene tips for the girls and spoke insightfully on the five pillars of the UNICEF approach in enhancing menstrual health. From the observation of VON, it was noted that the event was supported by some local and international organizations such as Pure Life Pharmacy Nigeria, Health Bay Consult, Kellogg’s Tolaram Nigeria, Perfetti Van Melle, UNICEF, Could You?, Pluggin and EDFIN MB.

The girls made an excellent presentation on the importance of living a healthy lifestyle and also did several beautiful and inspirational write-ups with assorted colours and art materials. He advised the girls to maintain a hygienic mensural habit and use the CouldYou Menstrual Cups. Equally, Barr. Chidera Obichendu addressed the girls on Sex Education, focusing on rape. She further enlightened the girls to speak out whenever there is an imminent attack and discouraged them from early pregnancy, which could impede their studies and destroy their future.

Could You? gave each girl a Menstrual Cup, Kellogg’s Tolaram Nigeria made cereals available, such as Kellogg’s Corn Flakes, Coco Pops, and Dano Milk for breakfast, while the Consulate served lunch with water and Coca-Cola. The CEO of Pure Life pharmacy addressed the girls on Menstrual Health and her team distributed packs of toiletries and light refreshments to the girls and volunteers. EDFIN provided the girls with writing pads and a pen, Perfetti Van Melle provided some Mentos, Pluggin helped with the planning of the event, UNICEF supported with their materials and lecture and Health Bay Consults made sure the program was successfully delivered as planned.

The Chairman of Yagazie Foundation, Mr. Kennedy Ezirim explained to us in his interview that during his visit to the community school where the girls are studying, he realized that they needed support to get learning equipment such as computers, tablets for research and learning, uniforms, writing materials and trees to help make their environment conducive for learning.  He went further to advise the girls to cultivate an optimistic mindset, stay away from cult groups, sorority groups, examination malpractice and other juvenile delinquencies. Yagazie Foundation assured them that they would help bridge the gap if given enough support. The organisation is requesting for support from the Government, International Agencies, Organizations, Financial Institutions, Private Bodies, and Philanthropists so that they can visit more communities and provide them with the following items: Trauma Response Education Materials, Medical Care, Mosquito Nets, Seedlings and Farming Tools, Clothes, Food Items, Household items, Stationery.

Mr Ezirim gave special thanks to the Consulate General of Brazil in Lagos, PluggIn, University of Northampton, Pure Life Pharmacy, Coca Cola Nigeria, Kellogg’s Tolaram Nigeria, Could You? Perfetti van Melle, The Food Bay, and Individual donors.
